Where can I submit anarchist poetry and essays?

Question

I am looking mostly for print magazines or e-zines that accept submissions of anarchist poetry and essays. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I strongly recommend against trying to get your poetry published in anarchist publications, or even presenting it as being 'anarchist poetry'.  Look for poetry journals  and literary magazines that publish writers you admire and who write similar shit, and submit your stuff to them.  Make a chapbook.  Enter contests.  Start your own journal.  If you're serious about writing poetry you should look for an audience that is serious about reading poetry.

I'm not sure what your writing is like, but here is a list of a few literary journals you might want to check out: Coconut Poetry, Action Yes, La Petite Zine, Shampoo Poetry, With + Stand...

And figure out a way to make sure that rejection will motivate you to write better, instead of less, because you /will/ get rejected.

For zines (both print and electronic), you could try perusing zinelibrary.info and finding recent releases listed under the Poetry category - see if they take submissions of poetry.

Some publications might take essay submissions, but it depends pretty heavily on the publication, and what sort of focus they have; a queer anarchist zine will look for different types of submissions compared to an eco-anarchist journal or an anarcho-syndicalist newsletter.

The best advice I could give might be to just look for publications that match up with the sort of things you write about, and then see which among those is open to submission.

Fifth Estate is a good one. I think they are going back to themed issues, so check up on their website.
